Right-leaning responses to the limited release of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the previous administration pointing out the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in images, while others lamented how extensive redactions cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative manner.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Fervent Rhetoric
Administration officials justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this open with the American people about such a sensitive law enforcement issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo outlining the censorship process.
Concerns Prompted by Redactions
While Trump's name and image are visible in some of the documents, the widespread redactions prompt serious concerns about the information may be hidden beneath them. A number of Republicans immediately called for greater transparency.
“The public are furious and walking away,” posted Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the redactions break the statute, and implied that a subsequent Congress may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, this document release egregiously does not adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he continued.
Some Rightwing Figures Rally Behind the Disclosure
But, some rightwing commentators and Trump allies came out strongly in support of the administration.
The release—originating from a DOJ run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are completely redacted, and many of the men shown in photographs have their identities blacked out.
Yet some do not, including prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, enabled some rightwing figures to launch the offensive.
“This is pretty rich how the political left falsely accused Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“New documents show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one explanation Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Clinton Campaign Releases Statement
Clinton has consistently said he was aware of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration has not been concealing those files for months only to release them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from information they’ll try and hide forever. Therefore they can release as many grainy decades-old photos as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement added.
Broader Conservative Comment Remains Muted
However, overall comment on the political right was comparatively subdued after the release, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for action that came before the legislative approval to pass a bill mandating the documents' release.
The commentator, who recently accepted media access at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal proponents for a complete release. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing personalities were given physical binders of materials that contained little new data.
